About the role
Shape the Future of Tissue Technology as a Design Engineer
Are you ready for the next step in your engineering career? Join a highly skilled team in Karlstad where you will help design market-leading tissue machines used by customers around the world. In this role, you will work closely with colleagues throughout the delivery chain, turning customer needs into tailored technical solutions. You will have the opportunity to develop both your design expertise and your involvement in customer projects while contributing to innovative, sustainable industrial solutions.
Your responsibilities
You will create detailed drawings and technical documentation that support purchasing, manufacturing, and assembly of tissue machines.
You will collaborate with engineers, project managers, production teams, and pre-assembly functions to deliver high-quality customer solutions.
You will contribute to the ongoing development, maintenance, and improvement of products, machine sections, and components.
You will translate customer requirements into practical and effective mechanical design solutions.
You will support customer projects from design through delivery and occasionally travel when required.
Expectations for you
You hold a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering or have equivalent experience in mechanical design.
You have experience and a strong interest in mechanical product development and design engineering.
You communicate confidently in written and spoken English.
Experience from the paper, tissue, or process industry is considered a strong advantage.
Some travel may be required as part of the role.
To succeed in this role
You enjoy combining technical expertise with a collaborative mindset and take ownership of your work from concept to delivery. Strong communication skills, problem-solving ability, and a structured approach will help you succeed in a role that involves close interaction with colleagues across engineering, production, and project teams. You are comfortable working both independently and as part of a team while continuously looking for opportunities to improve products and processes.
We also expect you to align with Valmet’s Leadership Principles, practical behaviours that guide how we lead, collaborate, and succeed together:
Take accountability – Act with ownership, set clear expectations, and follow through
Lead with courage – Champion change, try bold ideas, and learn quickly
Build on trust – Listen to understand, be open, and create psychological safety
Collaborate for growth – Work across boundaries, value diverse perspectives, and focus on customer value
We offer
You will join one of four engineering teams consisting of approximately 60 engineers working on world-leading tissue machine technology. The team combines expertise in mechanical design and technical project management, creating excellent opportunities for professional growth and knowledge sharing. As your experience grows, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of specific machine sections and components, becoming a key technical expert within your area. The role provides close collaboration with production and pre-assembly teams, giving you a valuable end-to-end understanding of the products you help create.
At Valmet, you'll work in an international and people-focused environment where innovation, sustainability, and teamwork are at the heart of everything we do. We value continuous learning and offer opportunities for professional development, modern work tools, and a supportive culture where your ideas and contributions matter.
