A permit process becomes much easier to follow when you separate the employer’s responsibilities from your own. Start with your citizenship, the signed offer and the official requirements that apply on the day you submit.
First, identify which rules apply to you
EU and EEA citizens generally have a right to work in Sweden without a work permit. Swiss citizens and people with long-term residence in another EU country follow different routes. Citizens outside the EU and EEA will usually need permission to work.
Do not rely on a recruiter’s summary alone. Permit rules can change, and the Swedish Migration Agency is the source that determines which route, documents and thresholds apply to your case.
What happens after you accept an offer
For a standard employee application, you and the employer sign an employment contract. The employer starts the digital process and supplies the employment details. You then receive an email from the Swedish Migration Agency and complete your part.
Check every detail before submitting: employer name, role, salary, working hours, start date and insurance. The terms in the application should match the offer you accepted.
Check the whole employment package
A qualifying offer is more than a job title and monthly salary. Conditions must be in line with a relevant collective agreement or common practice, and the employer must arrange the required insurance and occupational pension cover.
The salary requirement is tied to Sweden’s median salary and may change. Verify the current amount on the official page immediately before you apply instead of using a number saved in an old article or message.
Prepare before the application email arrives
Keep your passport valid for the period you hope to receive. Gather a signed contract, clear passport copies and any supporting records requested for your route. Documents should be in Swedish or English; certified translations may be required for other languages.
Use an email address you control throughout the case. You may be asked to present your passport, provide biometrics or attend an interview before a decision is made.
Your practical checklist
- Confirm the correct permit route for your citizenship and situation.
- Read the signed contract against the details in the application.
- Verify salary, insurance and employment-condition requirements on the official site.
- Keep passport copies, translations and your application email accessible.
- Never pay a recruiter for a job offer or use an unofficial application link.
