Stockholm: breadth and competition
Stockholm offers the widest mix of international headquarters, technology, finance, media and public-sector employers. It can also bring tougher housing searches and longer cross-city commutes.
When comparing offers, map the actual office rather than the city name. A role in central Stockholm and one outside the urban core can create very different routines.
Gothenburg: industry, mobility and the coast
Gothenburg has deep networks in automotive, engineering, logistics, manufacturing and industrial technology, alongside a growing digital sector.
The city is smaller than Stockholm but the region is distributed. Check tram, bus and commuter-rail connections before choosing where to live.
Malmö and Lund: one connected region
Malmö and Lund connect technology, gaming, design, life sciences, universities and the wider Öresund labour market. Copenhagen can be part of the picture, but cross-border tax and social-insurance questions need specialist guidance.
Compare the whole region rather than treating each municipality as a separate island. A short rail journey can expand both job and housing options.
Look beyond the three largest cities
English-language roles also appear in university cities, industrial centres and northern growth regions. A smaller place may offer a shorter commute, a different housing market and closer access to nature.
Widen the search when the role is a strong fit, then test the practical details: partner opportunities, schools, transport, community and how often the job expects you on site.
